Amblewood Motto: Cultivating Lifelong Wonder
As a ministry of The Reach Church, Amblewood is dedicated to creating a supportive, faith-driven community for both children and parents. We integrate Christian values into our educational approach, helping families grow spiritually while learning together.
Parents play an integral role at Amblewood, participating in classes, field trips, and book clubs designed to support homeschooling families. Our co-op activities and variety of community events provide a nurturing environment for building relationships and cultivating lifelong learning.
Tuesdays & Thursdays
Ages: Classes are for 1st grade through 5th, minimum age of 6 years old. If you have an older child you think would benefit from our class offerings, feel free to reach out.
Class Days: We hold classes September through May. We will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10am – 12pm for formal instruction and “forest school” in the woods. Then you have the option to stay for a picnic lunch and some extra hangout and play time until 1pm. See below for more details of subjects covered during class.
Student Registration Fee: $75 per student
Tuition for Three 10-Week Terms: $200 per term per student
($200 x 3 = $600 per year + Registration $75 = $675 per student for the year)
Younger and older sibling are welcome! This is not a drop off program, a parent is required to stay for the duration of their student’s class. If you have a child you bring with you on co-op days who is not enrolled due to the age restrictions of our class, they are welcome to sit with you during class, do their own work, participate in our group hangout and play time, etc.
Fridays
Field Trips: You also are invited to join us for field trips and additional nature study with our local Charlotte Mason inspired group Wild + Free Fort Gregg-Adams on Fridays. Many of the activities and field trips are free and covered by your registration fee. A few field trips may have an additional attendance fee – for example going apple picking, and it is up to you in which of those you would like to participate. This group meets locally and has a focus on outdoor Nature Study using the Treehouse Schoolhouse curriculum.
Wild + Free Fort Gregg-Adams is a separate organization which Amblewood Homeschool Co-Op partners with for extra time spent outdoors, making friends, learning, and fun! Sometimes these field trip days will be crafts, read alouds, and more activities at a local public park, and some will be short drives to places like Maymont, Pocahontas State Park, and the like. You will receive your own copy of the Treehouse Schoolhouse Fall Nature Study curriculum to use at home as well!
Siblings ages 3+ will need to sign up for a supply fee of $20 each for the Fall semester to be a part of the Wild + Free Fort Gregg-Adams group for Friday field trip activities.
Comprehensive List of Subjects
These subjects are covered within the first hour or so of formal instruction time during class across Tuesday and Thursday followed by an hour of exploratory time including elements of forest school, nature study, and scouting. A Charlotte Mason education includes exposure to a wide variety of subjects and requires we move through them quickly enough so that the child does not lose interest.
Subjects are diverse and interspersed in a way to use different parts of the brain and different learning styles at regular intervals.
Subjects for the 2024-2025 School Year:
Bible: Old Testament “Stories of Moses” & New Testament “Luke & Matthew” are read in KJV as a practice in learning to understand older writings.
Nature Study & Science: We will read “The Burgess Animal Book for Children” by Thornton Burgess and utilize “The Handbook of Nature Study” by Anna Botsford Comstock and resources from Treehouse Schoolhouse Nature Curriculum as well as scouting practice. This subject happens quite naturally in our environment but we will also have special subjects that we focus on and will be complimented by the activities we do on our Friday field trips.
Geography: We will read “Tree in the Trail” and “Seabird” by Holling C. Holling and learn additional geography concepts.
Poetry: We will appreciate pieces of classic poetry written by the greats, as well as some fun seasonal pieces provided by Treehouse Schoolhouse.
Foreign Language: This year we will practice some introductory Spanish phrases and learn some topical vocabulary that relates to our school activities.
Physical Education: In addition to scouting and nature walks, we will practice the physical discipline of Swedish Drill.
Recitation: The art of reading with feeling – we will practice reading several poems and Bible verses throughout the year.
Artist Study: We will learn to study and appreciate many great works of art, focusing on one artist per term and learning about who they were as well as their unique techniques.
Composer: Each term we will listen to and learn to recognize the style of a notable composer throughout history.
Folksong: Folksongs are a combination of fun rhythms and history laden language. Connect with the past and grow in your ability to feel the music. These also include fun topical songs related to our nature study.
Hymn: We will begin each class by singing our hymn of the month together! At the end of each month, students will have the opportunity to perform their hymn during a Sunday morning service at our church.
We use a variety of books and curriculum, including following the free schedule for several subjects and some book suggestions from AmblesideOnline, please view their License for Schools. Anything that we use from AmblesideOnline is available free to the public and we do not charge for those schedules. The registration fee you pay for covers the cost of our additional curriculum, physical books and supplies, facility upkeep, and your student’s admission to Wild + Free Fort Gregg-Adams.
